Lighght is the second studio album by indie pop artist Kishi Bashi. It was released on May 13, 2014. It was produced by Kishi Bashi and recorded in multiple locations, including Home Studios in Athens, Georgia and Clay Garden Studios in Norfolk, Virginia. Kishi Bashi's sophomore album builds upon the musical ideas he introduced in his first studio album, 151a. A classical violin writer, Kaoru Ishibashi continues to use the violin as his main instrument and source of inspiration
While Lighght is sure to give listeners a satisfying mix of sounds from track to track (some even a nod to 70s prog), the album’s expansion and deconstruction of classical form through a lens of indie-rock is consistent to a stunning degree. Sure, Ishibashi's looping violin lines are as prevalent as ever, but they're not as much in the foreground as on previous efforts. There are so many flourishes and layered subtleties going on in the album's eleven songs that after a dozen listens there is still plenty more to discover, as perhaps over-used as that compliment is now days
Kishi Bashi's sophomore album builds upon the musical ideas he introduced in his first studio album, 151a. A classical violin writer, Kaoru Ishibashi continues to use the violin as his main instrument and source of inspiration. In Lighght, he plays with the conventions of both classical music and pop music by layering, distorting, and looping violin sounds in experimental ways.
I’m a sucker for violins in rock music in general, but especially when they’re used in contexts outside of orchestral/baroque pop. Kishi Bashi is one of the best purveyor of indie-violin music since Andrew Bird, and they wield their instruments in similar manners. But instead of Bird’s iconic brand of chamber folk, Lighght is full-on technicolor neo-psychedelic pop, and it’s wildly infectious and great fun. All of the performances on Lighght.

Lighght Album Lyrics by Kishi Bashi. Lyrics to the Full Album on one page).
Kishi Bashi’s base formula; swelling choruses, sweet little pizzicato breaks and playful string arrangements interspersed with the occasional groovy synth isn’t much unchanged from his previous album but there’s even more musical texture this time. Even compared to the smash hits of 151a such as Manchester and I Am The Antichrist To You any song on Lighght stands up tall, and as a whole the album feels more intimate, more epic, and more coherent at the same time. Unless you can’t handle your musical tea with any sugar in it whatsoever, this is a staggering achievement of fun. It’s got serious chops, but at no point is it melodramatic.
